The perks of being a student Dordt.
Tuesday, January 13 classes began for all Dordt College students, so Monday afternoon all the people streamed back towards Sioux Center and finally came some life into the brewery. For the rest who had remained at Dordt College, this was a relaxing day and we have not done a lot more than sure we were well equipped to start the week. I had a 8:00 class research that is about evidence-based Practise. Flashy this is an interesting lesson, but we have this in NL treated a while back so it's actually quite a lot of repetition. On the other hand, here they go again something different with this subject than we do, whatever it is interesting again. At 11:00 I had an appointment with my internship supervisor of the Sioux Center Hospital which is only about 1.4 kilometers from the school. I should explain what I wanted to do exactly and how we could best do. I think that was okay because they think my english here is very good and level (at least they say all the time). So that is in communication very convenient. Because I'm only here for my internship I did not actually attend classes. On the one hand, this is fine, but on the other hand, I imagine myself not in the student life. Namely they also expect you to follow lessons because that is better for your visa. So what we did is that I'm going to take two classes on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. One lesson is a lesson here that ethics is very different than what we experience in the Netherlands because the health system here is very different. The other lesson (as I mentioned earlier) is a research class in which you are going to do evidence-based research. I've had this course on the Viaa but repetition never hurts. Plus I think it's also important to know other nursing students and exchange information.
In addition, my roommates came yesterday (Monday) at home, which I found very fine. I already had a number of days spent alone in the room and I was actually a bit fed up of being alone home. We live with our 3 in this apartment because one of the girls the same day from the apartment went to go live with a girlfriend. That means that I have a room to myself that I am very happy! The other girls are also very nice and we have Monday night actually the whole time chatting at the kitchen while enjoying a glass of coke! Yes because the campus is absolutely no alcohol allowed and no you can not smoke here. So Esther Hoekman, this would be absolutely nothing for you haha so live celibacy. Furthermore, I pretty much unpacked my stuff and there is now nothing more to do than to live. Now all a bit gets going, I have more confidence in the fact that these four months will fly by.
I am last Thursday started my internship at the hospital. This hospital can be found online as Sioux Center Health. The hospital is just to use and everything is new and nice to work with. And I can say, wow what it's all nice and clean and everything smells new. The people are very nice and helpful and we wear those little packets (scrubs). I have to wear a rather strange turquoise color so they can find me quickly if something interesting happened where I need to be with. I can organize my internship because the departments that seem to me the most. So you doing here as a nurse midwife also tasks, deliveries, and other things that can be made with babies and children. I may here also rotate in the emergency department, but that will take at least several weeks before I arrive there. For now my basic place in intensive care. And the reason I'm so turquoise scrubs wear is because if there is something interesting on the children's ward or emergency room so she can shout at me so, drag, to experience it. Furthermore, I am also doing jobs that I can not imagine in NL as a nurse. Here I go because also rotate in the lab. Do not ask me what I'm going to do it all, but I will probably still tell once.
Well, because I'm not walking into my daily round Genemuiden I go pick it up here in the last week or weather. The first days were so crammed with busy that I can do not have much, but that was quite nice once. I had in NL as well prepared as possible to what I should take for running in the cold. But that was nowhere to be necessary because the recreation center that is literally 1 minute walk from here has an indoor track of 400 meters, in the middle all basketball / volleyball courts, a room with treadmills, ellipticals, etc. And they also have two spaces where you can do everything that has to do with strength training. Across the street from my apartment is a skating rink, and a swimming pool where we can use for free. You do not get bored here, but it can of course. There is also a chapel on campus where you can go for services and concerts. There is a very beautiful organ built which also played on. So I imagine myself yet still a little home. About 3 minutes walk from my apartment is the music building. In the basement are about 30 different rooms (yes I'm exaggerating a little) with pianos and organs where the music students use it, but what you just as an outsider can make use of. So I can so occasionally playing on a wing and I live it.
And I have been here last Sunday to the church in Sioux Center. Here there are many churches that look like the churches at home, although they still have some else do it in terms of format (standing, sitting, standing, praying, answers to the ten commandments, etc.) but I think I can handle it get used so over time. There is also a small shopping center and a number of coffee chains where you can go. A local here, the fruited plain, it has yummy chai tea latte and smoothies. I am this week been a number of times, and you can continue with the coffee corner (yes yes, still in Dutch) is also very tasty coffee catch up with all kinds of flavors. You can not expect everything to be the same as at home, but I do care that I feel at home here. Oh, I do have a bike here anyway, so that's pretty cool. I race every now and then while on campus and now have the trail behind the campus where I also found occasionally on running. Is much better than some indoor track or a treadmill. Although many people had told me that Iowa is flat I have in me wrong there. Hill will be nice here, but back up the hill is really swallow ff. In the coming months so nice to enjoy the train here and all the fun things to me are still waiting. I hope next week to be more specific in what I do all right in the hospital. But seeing you meet would follow. (Oja and I've also been known Dutchman here, because apparently it is very interesting if you come from Netherlands)
